Magandjin/Brisbane indie-pop trio Platonic Sex are stepping into a bold new era, announcing their long-awaited debut album Face to the Flywire, set for release on Friday, 19th September. To mark the moment, they’ve dropped the title track — a slow-burning, soul-spilling cut they’ve dubbed their “most intimate song to date”.
It also marks a raw and reflective moment from singer-guitarist Bridget Brandolini (they/them), who wrote the song from the memory banks of their childhood — squished up against the flyscreen of a storm-soaked Queensland, trying to feel something real. “The words ‘face to the flywire’ are really special to me,” they say. “They represent a feeling of being on the inside and pushing out, wanting to escape, to grow.”
Platonic Sex – ‘Face To The Flywire’
The track’s backbone comes from a chord progression passed down by Bridget’s dad — a nod to the quiet legacies we carry. From there, it unravels into reflections on inherited patterns, messy love, and the strange alchemy of building a life with someone who’s carrying their own history, too.
‘Face to the Flywire’ follows on from a string of acclaimed singles — ‘Impress You’ and ‘Easy’ — both earning praise and airplay from triple j, KEXP, 4ZZZ, Rolling Stone Australia and more. The album itself promises to be a hazy, sun-drenched portrait of growing up and growing apart, set against the sticky heat and cicada hum of a Queensland summer. Or as the band’s Jane Milroy (she/her) puts it: “These songs feel nostalgic, like the Christmas holidays. Sitting on the back deck and listening to cicadas”.
Recorded with Antonia Gauci (Troye Sivan, Kesha) at Golden Retriever Studios and mixed by Ball Park Music‘s Sam Cromack, the 12-track LP captures the band — now also featuring Jess Cameron (she/her) on bass — honing a sound that fuses jazz, folk, and dreamy indie into something warm, weird, and unmistakably theirs.
You can take the title track for a spin up above, or suss their forthcoming live dates down below.
