Video game fans have been remembering Ozzy Osbourne’s iconic advert for PlayStation’s virtual reality headset, the PSVR2.

Ozzy Osbourne, the frontman of Black Sabbath and one of the most legendary figures in rock and metal music, died yesterday (July 22) at the age of 76. A statement issued by his family confirmed that he died “surrounded by love”.

His death came two weeks after mammoth Black Sabbath celebration gig ‘Back To The Beginning’ at Villa Park, which went on to became the highest grossed charity concert of all time after the star-studded event raised more than £140million for Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorns Children’s Hospice.

Music fans have been paying tribute to Ozzy Osbourne and his huge impact on rock and metal while gamers have also been paying their respects.

Following the news of his death, Ozzy Osbourne’s 2023 advert for PlayStation’s VR2 headset has been re-shared online. The one-minute clip sees wife Sharon trying to get Ozzy to the airport, but he’s having too much fun with the virtual reality console. “I’m very technical these days,” he says at one point before playing Horizon: Call Of The Mountain. “Just let me kill these fucking dino machines.”

“RIP Ozzy Osbourne. I’ll never forget him starring in this wild PSVR2 commercial,” wrote one fan. “What a legend – somebody who loved life. Best thing to come out of Birmingham,” said another.

Other fans have been remembering Ozzy Osbourne’s appearance in ‘00s online world Habbo Hotel and his role in 2009 action-adventure game Brütal Legend where he played The Guardian Of Metal opposite Jack Black’s roadie Eddie Riggs. His tongue-in-cheek 2008 advert for World Of Warcraft has also been shared in tribute.

Footage of Ozzy Osbourne doing his own motion capture for Guitar Hero: World Tour has also gone viral following his death. “It was a lot of fun doing that dancing around,” Osbourne says in the behind-the-scenes clip.

“Man, we were so fortunate to have him immortalised in Guitar Hero like this. No one more deserving,” said one fan.

Yesterday Ghost dedicated their Madison Square Garden gig to Ozzy Osbourne. “For being the Prince of Darkness, he sure gave us a lot of light. So we’re going to tap into that and carry it forward, through a time of darkness,” said frontman Tobias Forge. His Black Sabbath bandmates also paid tribute, with Tony Iommi saying “there won’t ever be another like him.”
