A beautifully catchy psych-pop sound shines on “Shaping Up,” a recent single from Field Trip. Bouncy keys and mellow guitar pulses drive into a lush vocal intrigue — “walls are closing in on us,” — though also beckoning “not to be overcome” by the tumult. The vocal reassurances build with effervescent charm, as the “let it fall into place” urgings take hold in the multi-layered vocal harmoniousness thereafter.
Sounding like a lovechild of past (Todd Rundgren) and present (Memory Tapes), the track’s production shines throughout, particularly during the “is this everything that you wanted?” introspections past the two-minute turn — and into a serenely inviting momentary scaling-back at the three-minute mark, before another fantastic “let it fall into place” sequence arises to close out “Shaping Up” with satiating, glowing excellence.
