Tim Burton has said he believes the word “goth” has “lost meaning”.

The director is renowned for making goth themed movies (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands) and the recent Netflix series Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega, which centres on the goth teen at the heart of the Addams Family.

Despite that speaking in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Burton said he never used the word goth and he says “it’s lost meaning”.

In the same interview, the creators of Wednesday hinted that the show may run for seven seasons, with a spinoff show also being planned. Ortega and Burton also confirmed that the third season of the show has already been commissioned.

The second season is now imminent – with the first part set to land on August 6, before part two follows on September 3.

Numerous additions have been added to the show’s cast, including Steve Buscemi as the school’s new principal, Barry Dort, Billie Piper, Evie Templeton, Owen Painter and Noah Taylor. Lady Gaga was also added to the cast and it was recently revealed that she is set to appear as Nevermore teacher Rosaline Rotwood, who crosses paths with Ortega’s Wednesday in part two of the show.

Ortega previously opened up about working with Gaga, saying she was “definitely one of the most talented individuals I’ve ever worked with“. After working together filming the second instalment of the show, Ortega said of the experience: “It was just a really, really special environment to be there with her and Tim [Burton], two people that I respect and have been inspired by so much.”

“Then just finding out that she’s such a sweetheart and really kind and reserved, it’s very strange. I love that you never know what to expect from her, but you can always expect kindness and generosity,” she continued.

In a four-star review of season one, NME wrote: “This is a reinvention, not a rewriting – and the core character survives intact. Wednesday’s acerbic wit, her sassy putdowns, are put to excellent use by Jenna Ortega, who is perfectly cast. She’s spoken in interviews about “challenges” and having to fight to protect her vision for the role, but any creative differences appear to have been worked out.”

Elsewhere in his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Burton recently shot down rumours that Beetlejuice 3 is in development.
