A TV adaptation of cult video game series Wolfenstein is coming to Amazon Prime Video.
The first Wolfenstein game was released in 1981 and spawned a number of sequels and spin-offs including 1992’s Wolfenstein 3D, which helped popularise the first-person shooter genre.
A majority of the seven mainline Wolfenstein games focus on US World War Two army captain William ‘B.J.’ Blazkowicz and his fight against the Axis powers. The first few games see him trying to stop the Nazis from harnessing supernatural powers to win the war, while later games are set in an alternative history where Hitler has succeeded in using science-fiction technologies to defeat the Allies.
Plot details about the Wolfenstein adaptation haven’t been revealed just yet but according to the official logline: “The story of killing Nazis is evergreen.”
Patrick Somerville (Station Eleven, Made For Love) will write and act as showrunner on the project while developer of recent Wolfenstein titles MachineGames’ Jerk Gustafsson will serve as executive producer. The adaptation will be overseen by Kilter Films, who are also behind Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout series. Cast and release details have yet to be announced.
Taking heavy inspiration from the hit video game series, Amazon’s adaptation of Fallout premiered in April 2024 and quickly became one of the streamer’s most successful shows. A second season is due to premiere later this year and a third has already been greenlit.
According to Variety, the second season of Fallout will “pick up in the aftermath of season one’s epic finale and take audiences along for a journey through the wasteland of the Mojave to the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas” while The Ghouls’ Walton Goggins has teased that the next batch of episodes will be even better than the first season.
Fallout’s Aaron Moten has also confirmed the plan is for the adaptation to run for as many as six seasons. “We’ve always known that we’re going to take our time with the development of the characters.”
The most recent mainline Wolfenstein game was 2017’s Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus while 2019 saw two spin-offs (Youngblood and Cyberpilot) released. A movie adaptation was announced back in 2012 but never materialised.
In other news, Elden Ring developers FromSoftware has confirmed the long-awaited two-player mode for spin-off Nightreign will finally launch this week.
