Chris Martin plays secret set at Yorkshire pub before Coldplay stadium shows in Hull

Coldplay’s Chris Martin has played a secret set at a pub in Yorkshire, before the band play some massive stadium shows in Hull next week. Check out footage of the moment below.

It took place last night (August 14), when the singer made a surprise visit to the The Puzzle Hall Inn in Sowerby Bridge, and treated those in the venue to an intimate, impromptu gig.

It comes just days before Coldplay are set to light up the Craven Park Stadium in Hull as part of their latest tour, and later head over to London’s Wembley Stadium.

At the gig, the ‘Clocks’ singer was heard chatting with the crowd throughout the performance, and sharing banter with members of the audience. “Normally I have a crew of 250 people,” he said opening the show, before poking fun at a person in the crowd who heckled him: “The last time I got booed was in Romania by 60,000 people… so you’re nothing.”

At one part of the show, he broke out a cover of the Whitney Houston classic ‘I Want To Dance With Somebody’, but made a lighthearted switch-up for the lyrics partway through, when he realised he didn’t know the words. “Verse two and I don’t know the words so I sing this song for you. And if you don’t like me that much then you’re allowed to boo,” he sang, according to the Halifax Courier.

Towards the end of the set, he told fans that he was grateful for them showing up to watch the unexpected set, and clarified that it was almost like a mini-rehersal for the huge gigs on the way.

“Thank you for letting me play at The Puzzle Inn. Normally I rehearse on my own, you see, so it’s nice to have some company,” he said, also adding that fans in Hull can expect to see a cover of Elton John at the upcoming shows.

“I spoke with this guy earlier so I’m going to do one of his songs,” he said, referring to Sir Elton, and breaking out a rendition of ‘Rocket Man’. “What do you think the chances are we could keep this a secret between us? A 93 per cent chance?”

Wrapping things up, he said: “I want to sincerely say thank you so much letting me play in your garden and on Monday in Hull I’ll be thinking of you all and how kind you’ve been to a southerner. I’m very grateful.”

It’s a fitting move for Chris Martin to hold a surprise set at a local music venue in the UK, as Coldplay confirmed previously that they would be using the ticket sales from their upcoming stadium shows to help support the grassroots music space across the UK.

When announcing the shows back in September 2024, the band also shared that 10 per cent of all their proceeds would be donated to the Music Venue Trust, in a bid to help keep smaller music venues open and fight for the survival and development of upcoming artists.

They join other artists who are supportive of a £1 ticket levy, including Sam Fender and Katy Perry – who have all vowed to donate a portion of their tour revenues to support the grassroots sector.

“Coldplay are the perfect example of a UK band who came through the grassroots circuit on their way to worldwide stadium-filling success,” said MVT CEO Mark Davyd when Coldplay announced the news last year. “It’s fantastic to see them celebrating their own pathway to Wembley by giving back to the grassroots music venues that supported them and recognising the artists and promoters that are struggling more than ever to build their own careers.”

Donations will also be made to Music Venue Trust by the concerts’ promoters (SJM Concerts, Metropolis Music and Live Nation), the band’s booking agent (WME), the venues (Wembley Stadium and Hull Craven Park) and the official ticket agents (Ticketmaster, See Tickets and AXS). Tickets for the upcoming shows are available here.

To make commuting to the gigs easier for fans and more eco-friendly, there will be a shuttle bus named after Coldplay’s hit ‘Yellow’, which will carry fans to two ‘Music Of The Spheres’ shows in Hull next month. The concerts also include multiple stops at Wembley Stadium that run between August 22 and September 8.
