Before Daylight is a resonating new EP from A Farewell Device, the project of Bay Area-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Justin Vanegas. blending raw emotional candor with imaginative, character-driven storytelling. Its sound spans from memorable rock to emotive folk, navigating heartbreak, resilience, and the quiet triumphs of growing apart.

“Help to Lie” kicks off the EP with a narratively consuming appeal, maneuvering from the “packs her bags again and heads out to the station” on-the-road traversing into a beautiful string-laden “she’ll still sleep tonight” reassurance. The ascended emotion in the “sunrise” ascent continues the dynamic vocal flair, moving in its progression from folk-ready introspection to rousing Americana theatrics. “Jesters and Spies” comes next, sending chills in the “I was in love” heart-on-sleeve and “open your eyes” beckoning; it’s another excellent use of strings within a rousing guitar-led force.

Another highlight, and one that closes out the album with satisfying allure, “Did I Do That?” features the additions of M Jones and Judy Cruces. Shimmering guitars and vibrant strings complement the melodic vocal switch-ups, into the “…for awhile at least” yearning, and maintaining a sense of enduring connection throughout. “I don’t care if it’s meant to die,” the vocalists burst forth during the finale, showcasing the project’s more folk-forward abilities. All five tracks on the Before Daylight EP impress with their strong songwriting and palpable emotion.
