Ruel has formally announced his second studio album, entitled Kicking My Feet. The album is set for release on Friday, October 17th via Recess Records/Virgin Music, and serves as a follow-up to both his 2023 debut album 4th Wall and his 2024 EP Adaptations. To coincide with the announcement, the Sydney-based pop singer has shared a new single in ‘The Suburbs’, which can be heard below.
The new song is the second single to be lifted from Kicking My Feet, following on from ‘I Can Die Now’ last month. It was co-produced by longtime collaborator M-Phazes alongside Elias Danielsen, who both co-wrote the song alongside Chelsea Lena, Fran Hall and Ruel himself. In a statement shared to social media, Lena revealed that she and Hall were brought in to work on the song as a last-minute replacement. “Shout out to whoever cancelled on Fran and I that day, [because] this wouldn’t have happened [otherwise],” she said. “Ruel has always been a bucket list artist to work with… one of my favorite voices. Thank you, M-Phazes, for making it happen [the] day of.”

In a press statement, Ruel revealed that the creative process for Kicking My Feet has been his most vulnerable to date. “It’s been pretty daunting to offer up this level of honesty in my songwriting, but seeing the way it’s already connected so personally with fans has calmed my pre-album nerves in a huge way,” he said. “I knew I wanted to push myself on this new album, but it wasn’t until I had to finalise the track list that I realised I’d actually made over 200 songs. [I was] chasing ideas that felt more honest and real to me than ever. It pushed me to drop my guard and say what I actually mean. And that’s what this album is; a collection of songs where I share things I truly, truly mean.”
The announcement of Kicking My Feet comes after a prolific year for Ruel, which included releasing two long-awaited collaborative singles with DMA’s: ‘What A Life’ and ‘We’re A Pair Of Diamonds’. His covers EP, Adaptations, included covers of Sixpence None The Richer’s ‘Kiss Me’ and The Weeknd‘s ‘Call Out My Name’. He then released two stand-alone singles, ‘Cats On The Ceiling’ and ‘Make It Awkward’; at the time of writing, it is not known if these tracks will appear on Kicking My Feet. He also released a Christmas single, ‘Santa Doesn’t Know You Like I Do’, and performed at both triple j‘s One Night Stand and Rolling Sets Festival – as well as playing his first-ever orchestral show.
