Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere — the film that follows Bruce Springsteen in 1981 and 1982 as he recorded his seminal Nebraska album — will open the 39th AFI Fest on Oct. 22 in Los Angeles.

The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White portrays Springsteen at the pivotal juncture in The Boss’ career, as he struggles to balance his growing superstardom, his artistry and his conflicted past.

“It’s a true honor to open AFI FEST with Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” the film’s director, Scott Cooper, said in a statement. “AFI has always championed bold, meaningful storytelling, and I’m grateful to be part of that tradition. While Bruce’s roots will forever be in New Jersey, Los Angeles played a profound role in shaping his artistic voice. I want to thank [AFI president/CEO] Bob Gazzale and everyone at AFI for this extraordinary privilege.”

“AFI FEST is the stage and the screens where the world’s stories come together in Hollywood,” added Gazzale. “To open with Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere honors the global impact of an American icon and the true artistry it takes to tell his tale.”

Passes to AFI Fest, which runs Oct. 22-26 at TCL Chinese Theaters in Hollywood, are available now. Individual tickets will be available on October 6.

Based on the book by Warren Zanes, Deliver Me From Nowhere examines Springsteen’s life following the success of such projects as Born to Run and The River, as he strips down his music to make the haunting, acoustic set on a four-track recorder in his New Jersey bedroom.

The film also features Jeremy Strong as Springsteen’s manager Jon Landau; Paul Walter Hauser as guitar tech Mike Batlan; Stephen Graham as Springsteen’s father, Doug; Odessa Young as love interest, Faye; Gaby Hoffman as Springsteen’s mother, Adele; Marc Maron as engineer Chuck Plotkin; and David Krumholtz as Columbia Records executive Al Teller.

The movie opens wide Oct. 24 in theaters across the U.S. and will have its world premiere Sept. 28 at the New York Film Festival.
