Jack Antonoff’s Soundtrack to Film Starring His Wife, Margaret Qualley

Jack Antonoff today released the soundtrack for Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t!, a dark comedy which stars his wife, Margaret Qualley, along with Aubrey Plaza and Chris Evans. It’s the first time the 11-time Grammy winner has worked on music for a film in which his wife appears. The soundtrack was released via his Shadow Of The City Label with Dirty Hit.

The soundtrack blends a Carter Burwell score with tracks produced by Antonoff, including a new recording by Brittany Howard; a cast performance by Qualley, Plaza and Talia Ryder; and original songs by Lace Manhattan and Dixie Normus, the musical alter egos of Qualley and Ryder.

The album features Howard’s cover of The Animals’ 1965 classic “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” which was voted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011. The legendary team of Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil wrote the timeless song. It also features the cast’s version of the 1956 Carl Perkins classic that gave the film its title.

Qualley and Antonoff were married in August 2023. Qualley is the subject of “Margaret,” a love song from Lana Del Rey’s 2023 album Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. Del Rey and Antonoff co-wrote and co-produced the song, which was the last song written for the album.

Burwell is a three-time Oscar nominee for best original score for Carol (2015), Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) and The Banshees of Inisherin (2022).

Music has played a key role in several previous films directed by Coen (in tandem with his brother, Joel). Among them: O Brother, Where Art Thou?, which spawned a soundtrack that topped the Billboard 200 and won a Grammy for album of the year; and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, which spawned the Oscar-nominated song “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings.”
