Le Snaks, vodka Cruisers, Kath & Kim re-runs and goon sacks blowing down the street – welcome back to the unapologetically Aussie cultural dick-punch that is Playlunch, who’ve just dropped their second album, Sex Ed.
The Naarm/Melbourne seven-piece have built a cult following with their self-proclaimed genre of “bogan funk”, a chaotic cocktail of disco, punk, pop, funk infused with true blue ‘STRAYAN PRIDE – and this new record is arguably their most ingeniusly batshit creation yet.
Playlunch – ‘Real Estate Apps’ Ft. Aunty Donna & Purplepingers
Front and centre is the focus track ‘Real Estate Apps’, featuring a sample from an iconic Aunty Donna skit, perfectly capturing the bleak comedy of Australia’s rental crisis: busted heaters, unread repair request emails and late nights scrolling Domain. The clip even ropes in Socialist lawyer and housing activist Jordan van den Lamb (aka Purplepingers), best known for his viral ‘Shit Rentals’ series.
As frontman Liam Bell puts it, Sex Ed is Playlunch at their “most ridiculous and unfiltered moment yet” – swapping Zooper Doopers for Zippos and finding poetry in the chaos of suburban Aussie life.
From Coles runs for pot noodles and cask wine to Rexona-and-Corona hookups to an ode to beloved primary school giraffe-puppet icon ‘Healthy Harold’, the album is as funny as it is strangely poignant, capturing all the mundane details of Aussie culture with sharp wit and fond affection.
With TikTok virality (suss ‘Keith’ featuring AFL Hall of Famer Barry Hall in a delightfully unhinged cameo), triple j spins and a string of sold-out shows already under their belt – including two Melbourne dates snapped up in record time – Playlunch are on the up in a big way.
You can take the record for a spin here, or catch them touring it live across the nation next month (dates below).
