KPop Demon Hunters has become the most streamed movie in Netflix history, surpassing previous record holder, 2021’s Red Notice, with over 236million views.

Released in June on the streaming service, the animated film follows K-pop girl group named Huntr/x, made up of members Rumi, Mira and Zoey, who lead double lives as demon hunters who fight rival boy band The Saja Boys, whose members are secretly demons.

In early August, the movie had become the most-watched original animated film in Netflix history, but now has now surpassed all other titles to take the crown.

Last weekend (August 23 and 24), a singalong version of the movie was released in cinemas, with the majority of screenings selling out and the film making an estimated $18-$20million across two days according to Variety.

The movie’s popularity has also brought about chart success. Fictional band Huntr/x’s song ‘Golden’ reached number one in the UK, while The Saja Boys’ track ‘Your Idol’ reaching number two in the US, surpassing BTS’ record to become the highest charting KPop song in the country.

Red Notice, an action film starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds, moves down to number two in Netflix’s all-time list with 230million views, with the top five rounded out by last year’s thriller Carry-On (172.1million), environmental satire Don’t Look Up (171.4million), and sci-fi The Adam Project (157.6million).

Earlier this month, it was reported that Netflix is already working on a live-action version of K-Pop Demon Hunters, as well as two animated sequels and a stage musical. The streamer is said to believe that they may have found their own version of the Frozen franchise, which spawned numerous spin-offs for Disney. However, nothing has been officially announced as yet.

Recently, Ahn Hyo-Seop, who voiced the antagonist Jinu in the film, spoke about coming back for a potential sequel. “As someone who loves Jinu as a fan, too, of course I would love to see him come back,” he told USA Today. “But it’s not up to me”.
