‘Silent Hill 2’ fans hate the first trailer for movie adaptation

The first trailer for the movie adaptation of Silent Hill 2 is here, and fans aren’t impressed by what they’re seeing.

Return To Silent Hill is due to launch next year and has been directed by Christophe Gans, who worked on the 2006 adaptation of Silent Hill. A sequel (Silent Hill: Revelation) followed in 2012 but Gans wasn’t involved.

Gans’ “faithful” adaptation of Silent Hill 2 was announced back in 2022 and filming took place the following year, but the project was only picked up by Cineverse for release earlier this year. Now a first trailer for the movie has been shared.

The 40-second clip sees James Sunderland (Jeremy Irvine) waking up in a town where “something really really bad” has happened. He then goes exploring and encounters a burning hospital, creepy spiders and the iconic Pyramid Head monster before the film’s tag line “Return To Silent Hill: You Live Here Now” is revealed.

“That tag line is fucking hilarious especially since the game makes it clear that James can leave any time. Leave it to Gans to miss the entire goddamn point of the story again,” wrote one fan on Reddit.

“I just don’t understand why they take a genuinely good and emotional story like Silent Hill 2, and make it into a generic Hollywood horror movie,” added another. “Dude I was the most optimistic person about this movie but it looks like it lost all ‘subtlety’ of Silent Hill 2 – it’s just bleh,” said a third.

“Why does this look like a big budget film, yet a fan film at the same time,” asked one X user.

“Return To Silent Hill is an adaptation created out of deep respect for a true masterpiece of a game, Konami’s iconic Silent Hill 2. I hope fans will enjoy and be fulfilled with the experience this new film has to offer,” Gans said in a statement.

Return To Silent Hill will launch January 2026.

In other news, a fan-made crossover between Chappell Roan and detective video game Ace Attorney has gone viral following the pop star’s headline set at Reading Festival.
