Multi-genre Sydney rapper Zion Garcia will officially share his debut EP, The New Film Star, independently tomorrow on Friday, August 29th. A reflection on heritage, representation and the city that raised him, Garcia self-describes his style as “geek rap” and describes the EP itself as a rumination on grand delusions. “We have big dreams that we don’t even know if we can achieve, or how we can go for it,” he says. “It’s about striving for the same representation in the upper echelon, where there’s the same level of balance and views of stars and regular people.”
Garcia will launch the EP, and its accompanying short film, with a screening and performance at the Golden Age Cinema in Sydney tomorrow night before hitting the road next month with his longtime friend and collaborator Sollyy. Prior to that, Garcia gave Music Feeds the inside scoop on the best locales in his hood – so, please allow The New Film Star to get you properly nourished out west.
Zion Garcia – ‘Sensitive’
1. TnB Cafe, Rooty Hill
Get yourself: A cold-brew or a batch-brew. Let them choose for you, don’t be a snob. As for food, you can’t go past the Pork Longganisa burger with an extra-seasoned hashbrown on the side. You can also try their smashed avo, but make sure you get scrambled eggs with it instead of a poached egg. Super acidic and bright, plus with all the pickled onions they give you? My god. Crazy.
2. Mate Burger, Mount Druitt
Get yourself: The Hey Mounty Burger with chips. My favourite burger ever. If I’m not feeling a burger, which is rare, you have to get their Wagyu Beef Tapa with a Coke Zero. Man. That garlic rice with the tender beef, and pickled veggies on the side? Super acidic, super fatty, good portion size. Perfection.
3. Habibi Juice, Blacktown
Get yourself: The Acai with Pistachio. This is my favourite spot for Acai. Made me completely crazy for Acai. Nuff said, really.
4. Bar Luca, Parramatta
Get yourself: The Blame Canada burger. My god, it is HEAVY. But it’s also one of the best burgers ever. Make sure you get it with their shoestring fries, with hella salt.
5. Circa Espresso, Parramatta
Get yourself: Their signature baked eggs with beef sujuk. And a batch brew. Then a cold brew. They give you options, but I just rotate whatever they have. It’s all the best shit ever. They used to have this crab pasta, too. I haven’t seen it on the menu recently, but if they have it again, get it.
6. Take Away Food, St. Clair
Get yourself: The fish and chips. Burger with the lot, including cheese. Potato scallops. HELLA chicken salt. This was my fish & chip spot growing up. Even if I move out of the area, I’ll still come back for it.
7. Kou.ramen, Blacktown
Get yourself: Their Beef Bulgogi, and get a Yuzu lemon soda with it. One of my personal favourite dinners out west. Hits every time. Divisive, I know, but I don’t give a fuck what you say.
8. Fried Brothers, Blacktown
Get yourself: The Nash box, and choose either the Big FB burger or the Fried Brother burger. I get a water with it, but you can get whatever drink you need. I have frequented the Mounty spot since they opened of course, but their Blacktown spot is superior. All my friends will agree. It’s probably a placebo because of the easier access, and the seating is much better with the indoor options.
