Naarm/Melbourne post-punk spell-casters The Maggie Pills have just shared their freshly minted sophomore album Hearts Enduring Lingering Loss – and they’re celebrating with a pair of hometown shows in Melbourne.
Led by Argentinian frontwoman Delfi Sorondo and Venezuelan drummer Mario Perez, The Maggie Pills formed back in 2019 after both members made the move to Australia.
The Maggie Pills – ‘Swords & Knives’
Produced by Perez alongside Brad Jackson, the new record is all grit, intensity, and haunting liberation, blending fuzz-soaked riffs with raw vulnerability.
At its heart sits the focus track ‘Swords and Knives’ – a stormy meditation on the messy, unplanned nature of love. “Love comes in fast. It battles you from the inside out,” the band share in a press statement. “Being truly seen is terrifying. But it’s also the only way to really connect. And sometimes, it hurts like hell.”
The track arrives alongside a striking DIY video – a vampire fable shot on handycam in a single day and edited by Sam Mapplebeck (Tropical F*** Storm, Amyl and The Sniffers), which you can check out up above.
Elsewhere across its twelve tracks, Hearts Enduring Lingering Loss dives headlong into themes of desire, fear, grief and defiance, with singles like the grunge-laden ‘Velobell’ and the menacing fuzz of ‘Goths of Disgrace’ flying the flag for the album’s cathartic, uncompromising spirit.
Already staples of Melbourne’s live scene, The Maggie Pills have sold out headline shows, launched singles to packed rooms, and shared the stage with the likes of Black Lips (USA), Shihad, Cable Ties, The Meanies, Battlesnake, The Mark Of Cain and Private Function.
Now, with Hearts Enduring Lingering Loss, they’re poised to carve an even deeper mark into Australia’s heavy underground. Get the record into your ears here, or suss their forthcoming dates at Melbourne’s The Night Cat and The Brunswick Ballroom down below.
