Five years after its release, BTS‘ ‘Dynamite’ continues to shatter streaming records.

Today (September 4), the group’s colourful music video for the cheery COVID-19 pandemic-era tune ‘Dynamite’ crossed 2billion views on YouTube – marking the first time a K-pop boyband has ever achieved the feat.

The video raked in over 100million streams between December and now. BTS’ label Big Hit Music confirmed the news on social media earlier today.

Upon its release in 2020, NME‘s Rhian Daly wrote in a review of the record-breaking track: “‘Dynamite’ mines the bright, infectious sounds of disco to get its joyful energy across, sticking to the genre’s tradition of serving as a form of escapism when life gets hard. There are snapping handclaps that urge you to join in and hip-swaying rhythms ready-made for the dancefloor. As the song enters its second third, a guitar line worthy of Nile Rodgers’ acclaimed back catalogue enters, later joined by vibrant brass as Jin takes us “shining through the city with a little funk and soul”. Together, it becomes a giddily glorious salve to block out the world’s darkness.”

The K-pop juggernauts in early July reunited for the first time since 2022, with all seven members having completed their mandatory military service in South Korea. During a special livestream, the band confirmed rumours that they were preparing to release new music.

“We’ll be releasing a new BTS album in the spring of next year. Starting in July, all seven of us will begin working closely together on new music. Since it will be a group album, it will reflect each member’s thoughts and ideas. We’re approaching the album with the same mindset we had when we first started,” BTS said in a statement.

“We’re also planning a world tour alongside the new album,” they added. “We’ll be visiting fans all around the world, so we hope you’re as excited as we are.”
