Fans of The Simpsons have spotted another prediction about the forthcoming sequel to The Simpsons Movie.
The first film was released in 2007 and following its release, an episode in season 19 (He Loves To Fly And He D’ohs) opened with Bart’s usual chalkboard gag, which saw him writing over and over on the board: “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie.”
It seems that creator Matt Groening fulfilled Bart’s prophecy as the forthcoming sequel, which was announced by Disney earlier this week, is set to be released on July 23, 2027, 20 years and two days after the first film received its world premiere in Springfield, Vermont, on July 21, 2007.
Fans were quick to pick up on the chalkboard gag, with one writing: “Anyone else have a part of them feel like Matt Groening and The Simpsons crew deliberately waited based on this gag from their first episode post-movie to finally release a second film?”
Another added: “Did they actually wait on purpose to do this?”

On a Reddit thread, one user also wrote, “Guess they weren’t lying after all” alongside Bart’s chalkboard gag, while another added: “They kept their word, the film will release in July 2027 while this episode came out in September 2007. lol.”
Someone else said: “The prophecy is true…THE PROPHECY IS TRUE!”
It is the latest in a long line of predictions the animated series has made, which over the years have included a 1993 episode titled Marge In Chains – which saw Springfield hit with an outbreak of the Osaka Flu, worsened by the presence of killer bees. This mirrored the global COVID-19 pandemic, and the presence of deadly giant hornets during that period.
In the 2006 episode Homer’s Paternity Coot, Homer searched for jewels underwater in a submarine, before getting stuck in a barrier reef and losing oxygen. The storyline resembled the case of OceanGate’s Titanic submersible in 2023, which lost communication and imploded upon descent.
The show also appeared to predict the results of last year’s US presidential election.
The Simpsons Movie was a major hit, earning over $500million (£371million) at the global box office against a $75million (£55.6million) budget. It saw the residents of Springfield being confined under a giant glass dome after Homer’s pet pig caused an environmental disaster.
A potential sequel has been discussed for many years – in 2015, executive producer Al Jean described it as a 50/50 possibility, while four years later, show creator Groening said he was in “no doubt” that it would happen “one of these days”.
