Danish project TRALALAS, the dark-pop endeavor of songwriter Morten Alsinger, channels a cinematic, nocturnal intensity on new single “Burns.” Following July’s striking debut “Winter on the Vine,” this second release deepens the project’s exploration of human fragility and shifting emotions, evoking a brooding allure reminiscent of Tom Waits at his most shadowy. Gravelly vocals, organ backdrops, and twang-tinged guitar tones entwine with haunted poetics, setting the stage for the project’s forthcoming debut album this autumn.
A slight backing organ glows as a twangy guitar mystique unveils itself. Gentle percussive pit-patter complements a foreboding vocal feeling, as a gravelly lead and chilly backing vocal intertwining let out: “When I walk back to her, like I do.” The vocals haunt in their steady tone — lamenting “like a flame, I got burnt” — as the guitars ascend with vibrant heightening and the organs linger with a blaring quality. “So it goes, like a weight without a stone,” they continue, depicting a final shot at redemption as “she throws me a bone” — and then into a delectable final minute with whirring guitar wailing and haunting organ-laden chills. “Burns” is a thoroughly resonating success from Tralalas, leaving us thoroughly anticipating the project’s forthcoming album.
