Warner Bros. and Legendary announced the as yet untitled sequel to this year’s A Minecraft Movie, revealing that it would be released in cinemas on July 23 2027.

The video game adaptation was an huge hit at cinemas this year, grossing $957.8 million (£720 million) globally, making it the second highest grossing movie of the year so far.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, its been reported that Jared Hess returns to direct the sequel and that he will write the script with Chris Galletta, who worked on the original.

Jack Black, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Coolidge starred in the original movie although as yet, there is no news on any castings for the upcoming film.

Earlier this year, groups of teenagers going to see A Minecraft Movie divided opinion online due to the popular “chicken jockey” trend that saw some of them causing chaos in the cinema.

The phrase “chicken jockey” appears just before Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison, played by Jason Momoa, fights a child zombie who’s riding a chicken; in other words, a “chicken jockey”.

Jack Black’s Steve then uses the phrase, at which point some teenage viewers descend into a frenzy, many throwing popcorn and drinks and shouting and yelling, disturbing other cinema attendees. In response, some cinemas set additional regulations to discourage the trend.

Director Hess acknowledged the trend at the time, telling Entertainment Weekly  that it was “bananas”.

NME gave the film a two-star review, writing: “Unfortunately, A Minecraft Movie feels more like an advert for the game rather than a celebration of what makes it great. There is just enough in the brisk 101-minute runtime to inspire newcomers to check out The Overworld for themselves but you’d think a film about the awesome power of creativity would be a bit more innovative.”
