The creators of Stranger Things have said that they will finally reveal what the ‘Upside Down’ is in the final series.

The beloved Netflix hit show is due to air its final season this November. So far, it’s been confirmed that the season will be split into three volumes – with the runtimes for its first instalment being revealed recently.
The series’ trailer has teased a showdown between the town of Hawkins and the evil Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), with Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) grieving Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn), who has died with the town believing him to be a murderer. The trailer also gave us our first look at new character Dr. Kay, who will be played by sci-fi legend Linda Hamilton.
In a new interview with Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers, they’ve now revealed that the mysterious ‘Upside Down’ will be explained to viewers. In the show, the ‘Upside Down’ is an alternative world where creatures and nefarious forces exist.
In a new interview with Variety, Ross Duffer explained that going into the writers’ room, they knew the biggest questions they needed to answer was “about what the Upside Down was.” He continued: “Every season would be like, ‘Should we talk about it?’ And we’d go, ‘No, let’s wait.’ And then finally, we’re like, ‘Well, we have to now!’”
Elsewhere in the interview, the brothers confirmed that there will be an 18-month time jump from the fourth season’s finale to the first episode of season five. All the characters will be back in Hawkins, living under military quarantine. Additionally, Variety further confirmed that the finale will run at “around two hours”.
The first chapter of Stranger Things‘ fifth season will arrive on November 27 at 1am GMT, while the second part will drop at 1am on December 26. Its finale will then air on New Year’s Day in the UK. You can find out everything else you need to know about the show here.
Various cast members have given their thoughts on the series ending since it first started filming in November 2015. David Harbour has professed he was glad the series is ending in June; meanwhile, Caleb McLaughlin said he felt “blessed” to be part of it. Late last year, Millie Bobby Brown was filmed breaking down as she read her goodbye letter to the cast and crew.
Meanwhile, Finn Wolfhard told NME in an interview last April that leaving Stranger Things “feels like a weird graduation in my life”. “With Stranger Things ending last year, it was the end of an era, and to have [Hell Of A Summer] coming out – which I’ve been living with for years – feels like a new start. It’s nerve-wracking but I also want to celebrate it.”
In other news, the Stranger Things creators are reportedly planning a Twin Peaks-inspired spin-off.
