The Boys is getting even more political with final season, its writer has revealed, saying “it’s about resistance against a fascist government.”

The Amazon Prime Video superhero series is adapted from the comic books written by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, and it follows the titular team of vigilantes as they combat super-powered enemies who abuse their powers.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Eric Kripke teased that the show becomes more political and opened up about two new storylines where this could be particularly visible in the new show.

He was asked about the end of season two of spin-off Gen V, where A-Train and Starlight seemingly invited the Guardians of Godkin to join the resistance, and how much of a role these will now play in season five of The Boys.

Kripke revealed they will play “an important part”. He then explained: “Part of the fun of wrapping out season two that way is that we really get to set the table for season five, where there’s now this active and growing resistance led by Starlight that A-Train is an important part of.

“They’re really trying to take the fight back to Homelander and this sort of fascist government. By the same respect, we still work hard to try to maintain our balance that The Boys is about The Boys, and Gen V is about Gen V. The characters provide crucial assists, but it’s still about The Boys, and you can watch it without having watched Gen V and vice versa. But watching both is still a much more fun experience.”

He was also asked about who Homelander is up against in season five of the show, as well as who the ‘players’ where in the show and ‘how fast’ the ‘pushback’ was on him.

Kripke replied: “He’s got a lot of people in line who want to bitch slap him…Obviously, Butcher is in the front of that line. But there’s Stan Edgar, Marie, Annie, Huey. They’re trying to mount a real push, but they’re also outgunned, outmanned. You’re in an entire country that has drunk Homelander’s Kool-Aid. They’re outmatched by the size of the hundreds of superheroes that are in every town across the country, who have been given authority over the police.”
He then went on to talk about the political elements of the new season, adding: “So it really is a true underground resistance against a fascist government, which definitely has no comparison or parallel to anything going on anywhere in the world.”
Recently, Kripke, who is also behind The Boys spin-off show, Gen V, admitted he was “irritated” by fans working out the show’s latest twist.

The Boys spin-off is currently airing its second season, with the latest episode showcasing a big turn of events as Dean Cipher’s true identity was unveiled.

Kripke told TheWrap: “I’m well aware that a lot of the fans online have been picking apart the clues and got on the right scent. I give them credit. In the same breath, I’m irritated.”

Gen V follows students at the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting, who are vying to join The Seven in the main Boys show. First premiering in 2023, the show is set between seasons of the main show, with the current one taking place after the most-recent fourth season of The Boys.

Amazon has not announced a specific release date yet for The Boys season five, but it is set to premiere sometime next year.
