Steve Martin has shared the text exchange that saw him get involved in Yungblud and Aerosmith‘s new version of ‘My Only Angel’.

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry joined forces with Yungblud on stage at the 2025 MTV VMAs to pay tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, and later went on to confirm that they had collaborated on an EP called ‘One More Time’.

Set for release on November 21, the first preview of the EP – a powerful track titled ‘My Only Angel’ – arrived last month and marked Aerosmith’s first original release in over 12 years.

Last week, Yungblud and Aerosmith went on to share a ‘Desert Road Version’ of the lead single, which sees them put a more stripped-back, emotional spin on it, and bring in acclaimed actor Steve Martin for a guest appearance.

Aside from taking on the lead in films including Planes, Trains And Automobiles, Cheaper By The Dozen, and Father Of The Bride – and more recently starring in hit series Only Murders In The Building – Martin is also a celebrated musician and has won multiple Grammys. He contributed banjo to the ‘Desert Road Version’ of the Aerosmith song.

Now, taking to social media, Martin has shared the text exchange that led to the guest feature.

“I’m playing banjo on a Steven Tyler song! Here’s our text exchange for no particular reason,” he wrote in the caption. In the text messages, Tyler is seen asking “Have you had a chance to [ear emoji]”, to which Martin responds: “I have not gotten the song! I wrote you but didn’t hear back. Oh, I think I mistyped a number. Can you send it now?”

After briefly joking about how they both wrote down each other’s phone numbers incorrectly, Martin says that he had now got the song through. On October 1, Tyler messaged again to thank Martin for his contributions.

“Steve… thank you sooo much for playing along with the song. We laid it in and wa-la,” he wrote. “You made the acoustic version of the song so so much better… now that’s something to talk about on Kimmel. So love your spirit. Yee Hahhhh.”

The original version of ‘My Only Angel’ debuted at the top of Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart when it was shared on September 19, and it remained in the Top 10 for three weeks.

The forthcoming ‘One More Time’ EP is produced by Matt Schwartz and is set to arrive next month via Capitol. It features four original tracks co-written by Aerosmith and Yungblud, as well as a 2025 mix of the band’s classic song ‘Back In The Saddle’. Pre-order/pre-save here.

It will be the first new music from Aerosmith since they retired from touring last summer due to Tyler injuring his vocal cords. Their 15th and latest studio album, ‘Music From Another Dimension!’, arrived back in 2012.

Before Aerosmith and Yungblud took to the stage to pay tribute to Ozzy Osbourne at the VMAs, Yungblud joined forces with members of Extreme, Sleep Token and more to perform a moving rendition of ‘Changes’ at Black Sabbath‘s ‘Back To The Beginning’ farewell show, which took place just 17 days before Ozzy Osbourne’s death.
