Romy has shared her touching new single, ‘Love Who You Love’ – listen to it here.
The singer has described it as a “proudly queer love song”, while it also serves as a closing chapter to her 2023 debut solo album ‘Mid Air’ – the song has been “in her care” since 2020.
“I wanted to write a song that not only celebrates and uplifts love as well as calls for change,” she explained. “The history of resilience and togetherness in the face of unbelievable challenges within the community is so powerful. Personally, finding friends, family and people I look up to and learn from through queer clubbing has made me feel so much less alone and braver in so many aspects of life.
“These experiences and the people I’ve met, continue to be so inspiring to the music I’m making and this song intends to be a love letter of visibility and pride. No one can take the love you feel away from you – it’s yours.”
She also shared a video, which is directed by her creative and life partner Vic Lentaigne, for the track. Check it out here:
Earlier this year, Romy released an EP, ‘Mid Air (Transcendence Remixes)’ EP which featured reworked tracks from the album of the same name. And last year, she shared a range of standalone singles including high-profile collaborations with Sampha and Jessie Ware.
Also last year, she teamed up with Jamie xx and Oliver Sim, her bandmates in The xx, on the former’s single ‘Waited All Night’, which they performed on stage together in June during Jamie’s LIDO Festival headline set.
The xx are currently working on new music together, too. Their last album was 2017’s ‘I See You’, but they were pictured in the studio together in March this year, months after Jamie said they were “having a good time” working on things.
In September, they shared rehearsal footage, and they’ve also been announced to play a run of festivals next year including Coachella, Primavera Sound and Open’er.
