Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 is out today (November 14) but fans really aren’t impressed with the new co-op campaign.
A direct sequel to 2013’s Black Ops 2, the campaign for Black Ops 7 takes place in 2035 following a period of civil unrest caused by the death of cult figurehead Raul Menendez. Your team of special ops soldiers is out to investigate new tech company The Guild, who have promised to protect humanity and restore order. However, they’ve also created a new airborne toxin that weaponises a person’s fear. Compared to the gritty story of Black Ops 6, it’s a surreal, sci-fi adventure that features murderous robots, near-future technology and plenty of terrifying hallucinations.
The campaign can also be played by up to four players. However there’s currently no way to adjust the difficulty if you’re playing solo, nor are you joined by NPC teammates, making the story much harder for single players.

“Oh my god, this campaign fucking sucks. I am just one hour in and this is genuinely the worst COD I have ever seen story wise,” wrote one disgruntled player on Reddit. “Probably the most half-assed campaign in the series. I can’t believe you don’t have AI teammates or a difficulty setting you can choose. Even though I liked the BO6 mission ‘Emergence’ I’m getting tired of the mindtrip storyline they continue to push out every Black Ops game,” said another.
Other fans are also annoyed that you can’t pause the game while playing a campaign even if you’re doing it solo.

Earlier this year, Activision made several changes to Black Ops 7 following backlash from players. The controversial skill-based matchmaking, which has been a major part of every COD game since 2019’s Modern Warfare, was removed in the beta and Treyarch rolled back plans for players to be able to transfer their Black Ops 6 skins to the new game after a majority were heavily criticised for being unrealistic.
Last month former Call Of Duty boss Glen Schofield said the modern games just aren’t as good as the classics. “They still sell well [but] they aren’t the same.”
In other news, the first official trailer for Fallout season two has been released, giving fans their first glimpse at Malculy Culkin’s “crazy genius” Legion soldier.
