Letterboxd has announced a new movie rental service that will be built into its app – find out more below.
Last night (November 19), the popular fan-populated film reviewing and logging platform announced plans to launch a new VOD (Video On Demand) service beginning in “early December”.
The new feature will allow film fans to rent individual films directly on the Letterboxd app instead of subscription-based business models operated by the likes of Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and more.
The company said in a statement on its website: “This isn’t a subscription service! No lock-in, no paywall. Just rent the films you want, whenever you want, and join the conversation with our community logging, reviewing and adding them to lists.”
Among the offerings in the Letterboxd Video Store are “festival standouts that are yet to be distributed”, “long-watchlisted titles finally made available”, “restorations and rediscoveries worth celebrating” and “limited-time drops of sneak peeks and unreleased gems (only here for a short time)”.
Some films will only be available for a limited time, and rental availability and cost will depend on the user’s location. Additionally, Letterboxd users can recommend films they want to be added to the Video Store by creating a list and tagging it #video-store-recs.
The Letterboxd Video Store will be accessible through the web, iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast and Airplay.
Among Letterboxd’s most famous users – that are known to the public, at least – include Ed Sheeran, Jeremy Corbyn and Charli XCX. Late last year, the ‘Brat’ singer gave her verdict on some of 2024’s biggest films. Among them were Challengers, Conclave, and Nosferatu which she awarded five stars. She also gave a like for Anora, at the time before it cleaned up at the Oscars.
