Nashville-based duo Haunted Like Human, consisting of classically trained guitarist Cody Clark and singer/songwriter Dale Chapman, have just shared their brand new single Family Name, a winsome folk song about the pressure to conform to tradition.
What I like the most about this song is its warmth and how rich Dale Chapman’s vocals soar, effortlessly infusing the song with a memorable dose of soul and emotion. Family Name is a song about how family traditions, stories and struggles pass down through generations; a reflection on the weight of inherited history (be it good or bad) and how the family name is an enduring presence felt through shared memories and scars. A relatable song wrapped around a polished folk production with intricate acoustic guitar plucks nicely intertwined with lush strings and subtle rhythms that come together to create an overall warm, intimate atmosphere!
The song holds the weight of everything that it means to carry the family name and all of the unseen things that are tucked into it. And it also begs the question of what we will do with that birthright and the life we will build for ourselves with it.
