Australian band PEPTALK, made up of Jay-Lee Kwan (keys), Lara Frew (bass), and Phoebe Sinclair (lead vocals), team up with fellow Australian singer-songwriter Huck Hastings to deliver their brand new single Pretty Colours, a dreamy alt-pop song about the end of a relationship.
Pretty Colours pairs PEPTALK’s pop sensibilities with Huck Hastings’s shoegazing vulnerability and the result is an emotionally-charged gem about someone struggling to accept the end of a relationship, holding on to hope even while knowing it’s hurting them. A song about the painful need to hear the truth you dread, just to finally let go, Pretty Colours beautifully showcases Phoebe’s dulcet tone with Huck’s passionate delivery, both packed with raw emotion, soaring effortlessly over the upbeat pop production. Apart from their gorgeous vocals and enchanting harmonies, I am particularly fond of the bright, expansive synths and how they are seamlessly intertwined with steady drum patterns and lush guitar strums, together creating an overall warm, heartfelt atmosphere!
We met Huck Hastings at a queer writing camp in 2023 where we bonded over sentimental lyricism and the joys of caring a bit too much. ‘Pretty Colours’ is a difficult conversation with yourself about not sugar coating an experience or letting yourself remember it differently. Originally inspired by a professional relationship that turned sour, we compared the situation to a romance that desperately needed walking away from.
