Vice Market is a stylish new EP from Captain Mantis, a band from Monterrey, Mexico that excels with an enjoyably eclectic, throwback rock sound. From the title track’s dexterous Latin rock inspirations to the folk-forward balladry of “Galatea,” the EP consistently compels with its quality songwriting and vintage familiarity. Each of the EP’s four tracks explore different aspects and eras of rock, showcasing alluring audible personalities that succeed in both passionate and subdued moments.

“Moonshine Alley” kicks off the EP with a dynamic rock charm, ranging from suave blues-touched intrigue into an ardent harder-rocking nostalgia. “Would you please take me to the nearest bar?” a melodic vocal inquiry, with shades of Steely Dan, drives into the heavier rocking hook — “going downtown” — before a hazy, hypnotic soaring takes hold at mid-point. Capped off by a delectable guitar solo, “Moonshine Alley” commences the release with ample enjoyment.

The EP’s three other tracks succeed as well — with the ensuing “Simon Frost” being similarly eclectic in its traversal from classic folk-laden introspections into a brisker rock hold, channeling a throwback progressive and alt-rock amiability. “Galatea” succeeds with its soft, trickling guitar-forward balladry, enchanting in its quaint string elements in the middle as well. The EP’s title track is a riveting finale, infusing Latin inspiration within a rousing rock energy — attaining a cathartic effect as flourishing guitars and Spanish vocals intertwine with replay-inducing impact. Vice Market is a fantastic, sating EP from the talented four-piece.
