Suede have already previewed ‘Antidepressants’ with the title track, ‘Disintegrate’, ‘Trance State’ and their latest single ‘Dancing With The Europeans’. The record follows on from 2022’s ‘Autofiction’.

Speaking to NME recently, frontman Anderson explained how ‘Dancing With The Europeans’ had been “inspired by a gig we did a couple of years ago in Spain”, adding: “The drama and juxtaposition between quiet and loud is really important in live music.”

He went on to talk about Suede’s standing as a live band. “Playing live is all about confidence – or the illusion of confidence, which is the same thing,” he admitted. “People don’t want to see a stumbling, apologetic performer – they want to see someone who seems to command a sense of magic.

“It’s a quasi-religious thing. The lead singer is the high priest and the audience are the acolytes. That sounds hierarchical, but you’re all after the same thing. You’re all after the sense of connection: you’re doing something that’s bigger than any individual. We have it in politics, we have it in sport, and we have it in music as well.”

Anderson continued: “When it goes well with Suede, I do feel like there’s a real magic in the room. I’ve learned to get better at manufacturing that magic […] I love getting up close to the audience physically. I love touching them, getting that feedback, diving in there. I love the messy drama of playing gigs.”

Suede will host a takeover of London’s Southbank Centre this month and next in support of ‘Antidepressants’. The NME Godlike Genius recipients have described the LP as their “post-punk album”.

“It’s about the tensions of modern life, the paranoia, the anxiety, the neurosis,” Anderson added. “We are all striving for connection in a disconnected world. This was the feel I wanted the songs to have. The album is called Antidepressants. This is broken music for broken people.”

Earlier this year, Suede shared an unreleased track called ‘Blinded’ as part of their ‘Sci-Fi Lullabies Vol.2’ collection for Record Store Day 2025.
