‘Elden Ring’ movie director’s “epic” 200-page pitch got him the job

It’s been revealed that Alex Garland only got the job of helming the Elden Ring movie adaptation after creating an “epic” 200-page document to show creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.

An adaptation of Elden Ring had been rumoured ever since the hit video game launched in February 2022 and in May, publishers Bandai Namco and studio A24 officially confirmed the project was in the works. “To bring the epic world and intense action of Elden Ring to film”, the project will be led by filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War, Warfare) as writer and director” while Game Of Thrones’ George R. R. Martin will serve as producer.

According to a new report by The New Yorker, A24’s head of film Noah Sacco visited Garland at his London home, where the superfan showed him the Elden Ring video game. Garland then asked if A24 would be interested in a movie adaptation. “Fuck yeah,” was Sacco’s response.

Garland then created an “epic” 160-page draft script and took that, alongside a further 40 pages of images, to Japan to get the blessing of Elden Ring’s elusive creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Fans were originally skeptical about Garland’s involvement in the Elden Ring adaptation but there’s more confidence after it was revealed the director has spent hours playing the game, and reached NG+6. He also revealed his most hated boss in an interview with IGN – Malenia, Blade Of Miquella.

Previously, Miyazaki said there was an “active” interest in an adaptation of the game, but only if he and the rest of FromSoftware weren’t too heavily involved. “I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play,” he explained in an interview with The Guardian.

George R.R. Martin has also called Garland a “first rate” director and shared a video explaining why the Elden Ring adaptation “won’t suck”. The Elden Ring movie doesn’t currently have a release date and the only casting rumour is that Heartstopper’s Kit Conor might be involved.

In other news, Resident Evil 9 Requiem director Kōshi Nakanishi has claimed that the new game is the “most extreme” entry in the long-running series.
