Amazon Prime Video has issued a statement to fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty, urging them to stop bullying the cast online.

It comes as the hit show – based on the books by Jenny Han – is currently on its third season, with the first new episodes debuting last month. This season continues to follow the love triangle between characters Belly Conklin, Jeremiah Fisher, and Conrad Fisher, with the latest episode arriving yesterda (Wednesday August 27).

Now, with just a few episodes left in the season before it wraps up on September 17, the streaming service has shared a message with fans, asking them to think twice before sending hate to the actors.

It comes after those playing Isabel (Lola Tung), Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), and Conrad (Christopher Briney) have been at the receiving end of backlash due to the actions of their characters. Numerous fans have reached out on social media to criticise them, and even gone as far as sending them death threats.

“The show isn’t real but the people playing the characters are,” an update on the show’s TikTok wrote, alongside a graphic that read: “The Summer We Started Acting Normal Online.”

This isn’t the first time that Amazon has warned fans of the series to stop harassing the cast and other fans online. Before the first two episodes of season three dropped, it shared a “PSA” on X/Twitter asking viewers to “keep the conversation kind this summer”.

“We have a ZERO tolerance policy for bullying and hate speech,” it added, saying that those found “targeting our cast” or “harassing members of the community” would be banned.

On top of that, Amazon TV chief Vernon Sanders told Variety why the warnings were necessary. “We’ve had similar situations in the past with adaptations, where there is a fanbase out there that I think can get rowdy, and it sometimes can blur the line between characters and actors or overstep,” he said.

“And so we really appreciate them and appreciate their passion, but we’re trying to be more proactive about setting expectations of what we want to encourage and maybe what we find not appropriate,” Sanders added. “And I think our creators and our cast really appreciate us taking the proactive stance there.”

Season three picked up the plot four years after the end of season two, and it has been confirmed that this will be the final season of the series.

Explaining the decision to end it now, Jenny Han told People: “There’s a lot of story, and it covers a wide expanse of time. My preference was three seasons, but I also wanted to allow the storytelling room in case I felt like we needed more time.

“We needed more canvas for the story, so that’s how we ended up with 11 episodes. But yeah, three books, three seasons. It feels right to me.”
