Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman play a warring married couple in The Roses.
Directed by Jay Roach (Meet The Parents), the satirical black comedy film follows Theo and Ivy Rose as the façade of their picture-perfect marriage devolves into a competitive tinderbox of resentment.
The film is based on Warren Adler’s 1981 novel The War Of The Roses, which was originally adapted into a 1989 feature film starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.
Other cast members in the remake include Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, Allison Janney, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou and Zoë Chao.
Who composed the soundtrack for The Roses?
The film’s score is by Theodore Shapiro, who previously collaborated with Jay Roach on 2019’s Bombshell, Trumbo and The Campaign. His other credits include Tropic Thunder and Severance, which landed him an Emmy for Outstanding Music Composition.
Speaking about the project, Shapiro said: “The score to The Roses is based around two simple themes – one of them where the two notes of a chord come together, and one where they drift apart, following the trajectory of Theo and Ivy’s marriage.
“The sounds of the score are unstable – steel drums, guitars with extreme chorus effects, and ondes martenot – all of them unstable in pitch and reflecting the wobbly foundations of the marriage.”
What other songs appear in the film?
Along with the score, the film’s soundtrack includes two original duets featuring Susanna Hoffs. The first track titled ‘Happy Together’ is a collaboration with Rufus Wainwright, while the other ‘Love Hurts’ is with Eric D. Johnson.
