St. Vincent lit up London’s Royal Albert Hall last night (September 3) with a performance of deep cuts with a live orchestra.

The singer, real name Annie Clark, was performing as part of BBC Proms, and brought out a set list of songs rarely or never sung live. She opened with a live debut of 2007 track ‘We Put A Pearl In The Ground’, followed by a number of songs that had not been enjoyed by a live audience since the 2010s.

‘Paris Is Burning’, which came toward the end of the set, had not been performed live since 2011, while ‘The Strangers’ and ‘The Party’ were last sung by the artist in 2018, as well as ‘Smoking Section’ and ‘The Bed’ which were played for the first time since 2019. She finished with ‘Slow Disco’, a standout track from 2017 album ‘Masseducation’.

The show was organised with conductor, arranger and orchestrator Jules Buckley to mark his 25th Prom, with the pair working on re-imagining songs from St. Vincent’s discography. “The concept here is not just to slap an orchestral wallpaper behind an artist,” Buckley said ahead of the event.

“We’ve worked together to find a new interpretation of St. Vincent’s sound. Annie and her keys player, Rachel, have toured as a duo, so that’s been an inspiration for how to reimagine some of the pieces with a larger ensemble.”
