The Mountain Goats have announced their return to Australia. The beloved American folk-rock outfit, fronted by singer-songwriter and figurehead John Darnielle, will play five capital city shows in mid-April 2026 – almost exactly nine years after the band was last here as part of the Bluesfest line-up in 2017. The band’s full list of Australian tour dates, as well as ticketing info, can be found below.
The upcoming tour is in support of This Through Fire Across From Peter Balkan – the 23rd Mountain Goats album, which is set for release on Friday, November 7th via the band’s own imprint, Cadmean Dawn Records. The album includes contributions from The Replacements and Guns N’ Roses bassist Tommy Stinson, as well as Hamilton‘s own Lin Manuel Miranda. The LP is reportedly a concept album, in which the titular Peter Balkan is stranded on a desert island with two others.
The Mountain Goats – ‘Armies Of The Lord’
Since Darnielle and co were last in Australia, they have remained typically prolific. A month after they left Australia, they released the album Goths – which was inspired by bands such as Joy Division and Bauhaus. A further six studio albums have ensued thereafter: In League With Dragons in April 2019, Songs For Pierre Chuvin just under a year later in April 2020, Getting Into Knives later that year in October 2020, Dark In Here in June 2021, Bleed Out in August 2022 and Jenny From Thebes in October 2023. The live album series The Jordan Lake Sessions was also released in five volumes between December 2020 and November 2022, with Live Archive Vol. 1 released this month.
