The Last Dinner Party have shared an emotive new single called ‘Second Best’, and added more dates to their UK tour.

The new track is the latest to be shared from the group’s forthcoming sophomore album ‘From The Pyre’, following on from the western-flecked lead single ‘This Is The Killer Speaking’ and the slow-burning ‘The Scythe’. ‘From The Pyre’ will be released on Friday October 17.

Written by guitarist Emily Roberts, ‘Second Best’ centres around that feeling of being infatuated with someone that you know will ultimately betray you time and time again.

It comes with subtle nods to Sparks, along with buoyant keys from Aurora Nishevci and a hypnotic bassline from Georgia Davies.

“I wish I could go back and say to myself that I am worth more than that, and that no one needs to accept being second best,” Roberts said, looking at the inspiration for the song. “I hope that the song captures the pain, anger and despair I felt but most importantly the defiance and satisfaction I now have in being able to immortalise this person in a song and to look back on the situation with more maturity.”

The band have also added three new shows to their 2025 UK tour. Now, new shows include a stop at the Barrowland in Glasgow on November 18, a show at the Octagon in Sheffield on November 21, and a gig at the UEA in Norwich on November 25.

Tickets go on sale on Friday (October 3) at 9am. Visit here for tickets, and find an updated list of the band’s dates below.

‘From The Pyre’ is the follow-up to The Last Dinner Party’s critically acclaimed 2023 debut album ‘Prelude To Ecstasy’, which earned them a BRIT Award and a Mercury Prize nod, as well as praise from the likes of St. Vincent, CMAT, Brian May and more.

NME awarded that album four stars, and shared that it saw the band capture “enough self-belief and magnetism to set them apart from what’s come before.”

The members went on to drop some hints to NME about the follow-up album at the BRITS 2025 this year, where they took home the award for Best New Artist.

“It feels really good to be creating again after touring again for so long,” singer Abigail Morris told us. “We’re approaching the second album the same way we approached the first album, which is by doing what we want to do without any pressures or expectations.

“Obviously, there is a little bit of anxiety about the sophomore thing, but we’re just sticking to what we want to do. It’s about doing what feels right for now.”

Later, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Lizzie Mayland – now going by L.Mayland – spoke to NME about their solo EP ‘The Slow Fire Of Sleep’, and revealed that fans can expect the new Last Dinner Party album to be inspired by “darker themes” and “processing heavier emotions”.

“It’s a pretty dark time, so I think that is reflected in the music because we’re in touch with the world,” Mayland said. “It’s not all sad, though; there are some bops as well! It’s not all downbeat either – they’re fun, angry songs. I won’t go into too much detail, though; you’ll have to wait and see.”
