This Ain’t Real is the resonating sophomore album from Copenhagen-based quartet HalfCutLemon, whose dynamic sound spans from jagged post-punk intensity to hauntingly cinematic atmospheres, blending angular guitars, twinkling keys, and layered vocals into a compelling, emotionally charged listening experience.

“Ointment” kicks off the album with an ardent rock sound, featuring vocals that swell from debonair intrigue into punchy passion as twangy guitars and a post-punk bass undercurrent intertwine. A slowed-down “wait for me” sequence channels a climactic vigor, as bolstered vocal layers add further infectiousness; the aesthetic reminds fondly of a cross between Interpol’s post-punk moodiness and Television’s sturdy guitar tones. Ensuing track “The Sun Is Dying” lends a chilly, ghostly enamoring instead — invoking the lyrics of “The Sound of Silence” before venturing into the solemn “children are crying” title-bearing ominousness; twinkling keys and haunting vocals stir here as well.

Another standout track, “Fist” melds buzzy synth elements and ruminating guitar work — conjuring a sound reminiscent of Wire’s tightly constructed yet atmospheric punk maneuvers. “We will look through your lies,” the rolling vocal feeling emanates, resembling black midi there in the carnival barker-like allure. Album finale “We Know Their Names” also consumes, compelling across angular guitar lines that expand into a more hard-rocking ferocity as the title-bearing refrain hits. The record’s blend of raw energy and textured arrangements confirms HalfCutLemon as a band capable of balancing ferocity with sophistication, making This Ain’t Real a captivating statement.
