K-pop soloist and former Day6 member eaJ has subtly called out K-pop groups for their silence over world atrocities – see what he had to say below.

Over the weekend (November 1), eaJ took to social media to share a screenshot of the comments section on his Instagram page. The screenshot shows numerous K-pop fans asking for the musician to speak out about the Sudanese civil war that has been ongoing since 2023.

In repeated comments, fans wrote to eaJ: “Please speak about the people of Sudan; they are suffering just like the people of Gaza.” Writing on X (formerly Twitter), eaJ responded: “I am learning and posting more about of Sudan as of late!” However, he subtly pointed out that most of the comments asking for his stance and support came from BTS fans, while BTS have remain tightlipped about their stance on various global atrocities.

eaJ gently told fans: “It does disappoint me a tiny bit seeing the profile pictures though :/ I really think we can make the world a better place if you commented on their posts as well! Let’s make the world a better place.”

In a follow-up post, he added: “Also to be transparent, as far as I am aware, restricting freedom of speech in a a working environment is illegal in South Korea, or at least that’s what I was told by one of the team execs during my residency. Could have changed but I doubt it”

When a fan claimed that BTS’ label is “zionist”, suggesting that BTS’ members couldn’t speak out if they wanted to, eaJ pushed back: “That has literally nothing to do with what is allowed to be said and not. At this point, it is a choice. They have the right to their own choices but wanted to point out from my experience of 12 years in the kpop industry that you can say whatever you want to say legally and there can be no repercussions.”

He reiterated his point in another public tweet: “To the best of my knowledge, there are no clauses in standard label contracts that could legally punish an artist for speaking out against genocide. APPLY PRESSURE. The world needs their voices more than ever.”

eaJ then shared a post of a watermelon badge, referencing his support for Palestine in the Israel-Gaza conflict.
