The official trailer for the TV adaptation of Nick Cave’s 2009 novel The Death Of Bunny Munro dropped yesterday (November 4) – check it out below.

Matt Smith plays the titular character, a misogynistic middle-aged salesman who takes his son on a road trip around Brighton and the surrounding area following his wife’s suicide, and both he and musician Cave serve as executive producers.

Rafael Mathé plays Bunny Junior, his son, in his TV debut, while Sarah Greene plays his late wife Libby. Johann Myers, Robert Glenister, Alice Feetham, David Threlfall, Lindsay Duncan and Elizabeth Berrington also star.

It’s scored by Cave and his long-time friend, collaborator and Bad Seeds bandmate Warren Ellis. The two-minute-long trailer contains snippets of Cave’s ‘Bright Horses’ and Jarvis Cocker’s ‘Black Magic’ – watch it here:

It begins with a fantasy, showing Munro with Bunny Junior, who describes his father as “the best salesman in the world” as he sells creams and perfumes to women.

But when his son is approached by a social worker, who suggests that he might not be in the best environment for a child, Munro argues, “His mother has just died in the most tragic of circumstances. Right now, that boy needs his father.”

His son, meanwhile, has been dealing with his grief by talking to a manifestation of his mother, who says to him that his dad isn’t “brilliant at looking after anyone who isn’t your father”.

The six-part series, which comes out on November 20, will premiere on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.

Later this year, a new Cave documentary, The Veiled World Of Nick Cave, is set to air on Sky Documentaries. Exploring his “enduring influence and unique impact,” it will feature the likes of Ellis, Florence Welch and Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood talking about how working with the former The Birthday Party frontman has “transformed their own creative lives, examining the archetypal figures woven through his work, his artistic courage and singular impact.”

Author Irvine Welsh, designer Bella Freud and filmmaker Wim Wenders will also discuss Cave’s influence on their work.

And last month, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds announced a mammoth run of European tour dates for next summer, including major festival shows. They’re touring Australia and New Zealand in January and February before coming to Europe from June through to August – and you can find tickets here.

As well as their already-announced homecoming show at Brighton’s Preston Park on July 31, they shared news of shows in countries including Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Czechia, before wrapping up at France’s Rock En Seine on August 28.
