A US congressman has criticised Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 for using generative AI artwork throughout the game.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 launched last week and fans were quick to spot what looked like AI-generated artwork throughout the game.

“Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 uses a large amount of AI-generated artwork across core assets (calling cards, posters, reward icons) instead of human-crafted art—despite being a major blockbuster title charging full price,” wrote one fan on X. The tweet was later shared by California congressman Ro Khanna who added: “We need regulations that prevent companies from using AI to eliminate jobs to extract greater profits. Artists at these companies need to have a say in how AI is deployed. They should share in the profits. And there should be a tax on mass displacement.”

“Tech billionaires are attacking me but I want AI that works for us, not them,” he continued. ”A company replacing artists with AI is not much different than one that replaces truck drivers. AI cannot just be for enriching tech billionaires. AI must be for us, not them.”

In a statement, Activision defended the use of AI in Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 (via Xbox Era) “Like so many around the world, we use a variety of digital tools, including AI tools, to empower and support our teams to create the best gaming experiences possible for our players,” they explained. “Our creative process continues to be led by the talented individuals in our studios.” However they haven’t confirmed exactly which assets were created with AI.

It’s not the only issue fans have found with Black Ops 7 with the co-op campaign mode slated as one of the worst in Call Of Duty history.

In a four-star review, NME wrote: “Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 builds on what made last year’s Black Ops 6 such a breath of fresh air, tightening up the gunplay and movement while still finding time to introduce a huge, polished new game mode. It’s not the quantum leap that the last game was, but it’s still one of the best entries in the series to date.”

In other news, Netflix is turning Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery into a party game you can play using your TV remote.
