Oasis dedicated their performance of ‘Live Forever’ at their most recent gig in Brazil to Stone Roses and Primal Scream’s Mani, who passed away on Thursday (November 20), aged 63.

Mani, real name Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, originally found fame as bassist for the Stone Roses, joining in 1987 and playing on both their iconic albums, until they first disbanded in 1996. He then went on to join Primal Scream and stayed with them until 2011, when the Stone Roses reformed.

News of his passing was shared earlier this week by his brother Greg, who wrote: “IT IS WITH THE HEAVIEST OF HEARTS THAT I HAVE TO ANNOUNCE THE SAD PASSING OF MY BROTHER GARY MANI MOUNFIELD,” he posted on social media, as Manchester Evening News reports. “RIP RKID.”

The news came just over a week after announcing a UK-wide in conversation tour that was set to take place next year.

During their show in São Paulo last night (November 22), Oasis took a moment to pay tribute to Mani, telling the crowd: “We wanna dedicate this to our dear friend, our hero, the one and only Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield,” before displaying an image of his face on the screen as they played ‘Live Forever’.

As the song drew to a close, Liam sang, “You’re gonna live forever,” and the band turned to face the image while the stage lights went down. Liam then told the crowd: “And he can have this one as well, ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’,” before launching into the track.

Liam and Noel had previously shared their own tributes to Mani, with Noel writing: “RIP Brother. It was a pleasure to have known you,” alongside a photo of the late musician on Instagram.

Liam, meanwhile, took to X to write: “IN TOTAL SHOCK AND ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED ON HEARING THE NEWS ABOUT MANI MY HERO RIP RKID LG.”

You can read these and many more tributes from the likes of Elbow, Richard Ashcroft, Tim Burgees and Peter Hook here.

Since Oasis began their reunion tour, they’ve used the gigs to pay tribute to other icons who have passed. For instance, the tour’s opening night in Cardiff saw them honour late Liverpool star Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car crash days earlier at just 28 years old. At the gig, Oasis displayed an image of Jota in his jersey onscreen as they performed ‘Live Forever’.

They also paid tribute to Ozzy Osbourne back in July – projecting a huge portrait of the late musician during ‘Live Forever’, before Liam told the 81,000-strong crowd they would be dedicating the next song to “Ozzy Osbourne, Rock ‘N’ Roll Star” and launching into the 1994 track.

Then, in September, they honoured late boxing star Ricky Hatton during their show at Wembley Stadium, also dedicating ‘Live Forever’ to him.

Earlier this month, they dedicated the track to Diego Maradona, who died in 2020 aged 60, during their first show in Argentina.

Oasis will play a final gig in São Paulo tonight (November 23), but rumours of more shows continue to swirl – with many fans convinced that the band could play Knebworth or the Etihad Stadium next year, with the 30th anniversaries of their huge Knebworth and Maine Road shows both falling in 2026.

Gallagher had previously implied that more live dates could be on the way after being asked if he was feeling “sad that the tour is ending soon” by a fan. The singer shared a subtle response on Twitter/X that suggested the band won’t be slowing down just yet. “I’m not actually as I know things you don’t know,” he wrote, before telling fans confused by the response to “google it”.

In addition to this, a British peer in the House of Lords seemed to accidentally reveal that Oasis would play Knebworth next summer last month before backtracking. On October 22, Lady Taylor of Stevenage claimed that the band would play five back-to-back anniversary gigs at Knebworth House next year.

She then told The Guardian, “I was speaking hypothetically following speculation that they would play Knebworth again as they did in August 1996. I understand the band have not confirmed this.”

The rumours of more Oasis gig dates were further fuelled earlier this month when Liam also told Australian fans he would “see them again” after they played two nights at Sydney’s Accord Stadium.

Prior to this, at the band’s final shows at Wembley in September, Liam told fans “See you next year”, before jokingly slapping himself on the wrist for letting it slip.
