Richard Ashcroft paid his respects to late Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist Mani during his support slot for Oasis in Brazil last night (November 22).

News of Mani’s passing at the age of 63 was shared earlier this week by his brother Greg, who wrote on social media: “IT IS WITH THE HEAVIEST OF HEARTS THAT I HAVE TO ANNOUNCE THE SAD PASSING OF MY BROTHER GARY MANI MOUNFIELD. RIP RKID.”

Mani, real name Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, originally found fame as bassist for The Stone Roses, joining in 1987 and playing on both their iconic albums, until they first disbanded in 1996. He then went on to join Primal Scream and stayed with them until 2011, when The Stone Roses reformed.

As he wrapped up his slot in São Paulo last night, Ashcroft dedicated  The Verve classic ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ to Mani and said: “I’d like to dedicate this next song to Mani of The Stone Roses. Rest in peace legend.”

His bassist then briefly broke out the bassline intro to The Stone Roses classic ‘She Bangs The Drums’.

It came ahead of Oasis‘ performance which saw Liam Gallagher dedicate their performance of ‘Live Forever’ to Mani.

“We wanna dedicate this to our dear friend, our hero, the one and only Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield,” the frontman said before displaying an image of his face on the screen as they played ‘Live Forever’.

As the song drew to a close, Liam sang, “You’re gonna live forever,” and the band turned to face the image while the stage lights went down. Liam then told the crowd: “And he can have this one as well, ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’,” before launching into the track.

Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs also shared a picture of himself wearing a Brazil football shirt with Mani’s name on the back.

Earlier this week Ashcroft, Liam and Noel Gallagher all paid their respects on social media when they heard of Mani’s death.

“Mani was one of the loveliest positive musicians to spend time with he was a key element to the band that inspired me to believe I could do this music thing he had the style the swagger and the sound but most importantly a warm heart,” Ashcroft wrote. “My condolences to Greg his sons and family. Rest in peace brother now burst into heaven!”

Liam, meanwhile, took to X to write: “IN TOTAL SHOCK AND ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED ON HEARING THE NEWS ABOUT MANI MY HERO RIP RKID LG.”

Noel also wrote: “RIP Brother. It was a pleasure to have known you,” alongside a photo of the late musician on Instagram.

You can read these and many more tributes from the likes of Elbow, Tim Burgees and Peter Hook here.

Meanwhile, Oasis will wrap up their mammoth ‘Live ‘25’ tour for their second show in Brazil tonight (November 23).

Any future dates are unclear at this stage after Liam recently said that Oasis “need to sit down and discuss” plans.
