Eva Green is set to star in season three of Wednesday, playing Morticia Addams’ sister, Ophelia Frump.

The Netflix series first introduced the character right at the end of the season two finale when she was seen from the back for a few seconds, wearing a flower crown and writing ‘Wednesday must die’ on a wall. She’s now set to be a regular character, with Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children and Proxima actress Green picking up the role.

With the announcement, Green becomes the first big addition for the third season, which was given the greenlight over the summer ahead of season two’s premiere on August 6. It comes after speculation surrounding the character, some fans suggesting that Lady Gaga’s character Rosaline Rotwood could be the same person as Frump.

Throughout the second season of Wednesday, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) described her sister as missing after she lost her abilities as a raven – a type of psychic with darker visions – almost mirroring Wednesday’s own loss of powers in the season.

She was committed to Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital by their mother, Hester (Joanna Lumley), but was able to escape. At the end of the season two finale, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) was reading her aunt’s journal – given to her by Morticia – and had a vision of a woman with long blonde hair and a flower crown in her grandmother’s basement.

Creators Al Gough and Miles Millar told Netflix’s Tudum, “Eva Green has always brought an exhilarating, singular presence to the screen — elegant, haunting, and beautifully unpredictable. Those qualities make her the perfect choice for Aunt Ophelia. We’re excited to see how she transforms the role and expands Wednesday’s world.”

Green herself added, “I’m thrilled to join the woefully twisted world of Wednesday as Aunt Ophelia. This show is such a deliciously dark and witty world, I can’t wait to bring my own touch of cuckoo-ness to the Addams family.”

There’s no official release date set for season three, but it’s projected to come out around summer 2027, with production expected to begin early next year.

NME gave season two of Wednesday a four-star review upon its release, writing that “goth queen Jenna Ortega reclaims her kooky crown” and “the long-awaited follow-up to Tim Burton‘s creepy megahit provides more of the frightsome same.”

An Uncle Fester spin-off is in the works, meanwhile, as actor Fred Armisen confirmed in September. When asked about reports of a new show focusing on his character while on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he replied, “Yeah, we’re working on it. It’s fantastic… It’s amazing.”
