Donald Trump’s ‘AI Action Plan’ doesn’t talk about copyright, but during an on-stage ramble when launching the plan yesterday the President made it clear he’s very much bought the tech sector’s official line on copyright and AI. Expecting American AI companies to seek permission before making use of any copyright protected works when training their models is “not doable”, according to Trump, and will give China a competitive advantage. “You can’t be expected to have a successful AI programme when every single article, book or anything else that you’ve read or studied, you’re supposed to pay for”, the President said. “You just…
Wednesday became Netflix’s surprise hit of 2022. After some middling animated films in recent years, this sharp, modern and slick reboot catapulted The Addams Family back onto screens for the first time since the 1990s. The smartest decision was to pivot focus to Wednesday Addams and, more specifically, Jenna Ortega. Between her cutting stare, deadpan delivery and twitchy dance moves, her take on the death-obsessed outcast is a prickly thorn rooted in modern sensibilities. But will there be another adventure for everyone’s favourite gothic teen? Has a second season of Wednesday been confirmed? You betcha Netflix announced at the start…
Kneecap have been banned from Hungary for three years ahead of their planned performance at Sziget 2025. The Irish rap trio were due to play at the Budapest festival this year, but the government have now announced the group won’t be able to enter the country at all. Secretary of State Zoltan Kovacs took to X/Twitter to announced that Kneecap “are officially banned from entering Hungary—for anti-Semitism and glorifying terror. When hate ignores the mail, we put it on a wall.” Kovacs went on to say that “Hungary has zero tolerance for anti-Semitism in any form”, adding that their appearance…
A true showman and rock god, Ozzy Osbourne lived life his way. That rings true even for his death, which came just weeks after his grandiose farewell show with Black Sabbath in his home city of Birmingham. The ‘Back To The Beginning’ concert served as a thank you to fans old and new, and backed by an elite list of rock and metal musicians, paid homage to the Prince of Darkness’ legacy and his band – a pioneering force behind heavy music. Without Ozzy, metal as we know it wouldn’t exist. He was the first to introduce feral, doom-inducing screams,…
South Park made its return after a two-year hiatus yesterday (July 23), and used the first episode back to launch a scathing criticism of Donald Trump. The episode was titled Sermon on the Mount, and showed the President in bed with the character of Satan, as well as making nods to other recent headlines linking him to the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and the lawsuit he filed against Paramount. Towards the beginning of the episode, Cartman learned that his favourite radio show on NPR, where “liberals bitch and whine about stuff”, had been cancelled by the…
It’s been years since Daniel Caesar felt completely at home in Toronto. But sitting onstage at the Mod Club on a hot June night, he’s comfortable and happy in the glow of the familiar lights. This is the venue where Caesar had his first major headlining concert in 2016 — long before he’d headlined Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena and New York’s Madison Square Garden, as he did on his most recent tour in 2023. Tonight, standing before just 600 people both solo and accompanied only by his longtime collaborators Matthew Burnett and Jordan Evans on guitar and drums, respectively, Caesar has…
Bob Geldof has hit out at the “abysmal” starvation of children in Gaza with a plea to Israel. The comments come 40 years after the Boomtown Rats singer brought the world’s attention to the Ethiopian famine with Live Aid. Now, the Irish singer has turned his sights to the scenes in Gaza. In an article written by Geldof himself published on the Daily Express, he responded to a photograph of one-year-old Muhammad Zakariya Ayyoub al-Matouq, emaciated from malnutrition. “What has happened to the Israeli people?”, his statement began. “Whatever the titanic enormity of your own past and current suffering, what has…
After leading the events division of major Hispanic media giant SBS (Spanish Broadcasting Systems) for more than a decade, executive Lucas Piña is applying his live event experience to build a very different kind of festival. The Mega Extraterrestrial Fest V (or MEF5 for short), which is being billed as “the first extraterrestrial global brand,” is envisioned as a three-day fest that will feature 11 hours of music daily, featuring more than 30 DJs and artists. The fest will also feature “characters” designed and created for the festival’s multiverse, which will be built using holograms, special effects, digital animation, augmented…
The Veronica Electronica remix project of Madonna‘s Ray of Light arrives on Friday. Originally considered as a name for the 1998 album, Veronica Electronica features eight edits of songs from the album and comes 27 years after Ray of Light‘s release. The original album’s campaign put Madonna, as ever, into the center of cultural consciousness, with the superstar making a barrage of appearances and performing music from the album on television and awards shows ranging from The Rosie O’Donnell Show to Top of the Pops to The Oprah Winfrey Show and the 1998 Academy Awards, where she presented the Oscar for…
An immersive rock sound shows on “Walls,” a standout track from Oakland-based rock project Fieldress. Via their new album It’s a Lot, the release showcases their dynamic prowess — moving from debonair, hypnotic intrigue into a more anthemic vigor by mid-point. The initially twangy suaveness ascends into a soaring vocal elongation — “we watch the walls fall” — as sturdy guitar ruminations persist alongside, reminding fondly of Wolf Alice in its vocal tone and eclectic tonal traversal. The act, led by Sasha Reynolds, thoroughly impress on “Walls” and throughout the full-length. Stream the project’s new album, It’s a Lot, in…
