“Jay-Z is a funny guy.” That’s what someone on X said regarding another tweet saying that White Christian Nationalists are going to lose it over the news that Bad Bunny was picked to perform at the Super Bowl. And of course, they were right: jokes flew, memes were made. One Bad Bunny fan page posted a screenshot of one of his performances with the closed captions saying, “speaking non-english, singing in non-english.” Then there was the other side of the spectrum where I saw someone replying to multiple tweets referring to the Puerto Rican superstar as “Speedy Gonzalez,” the type of old-school racism that you can’t help but chuckle at when you come across it. My group chats…
Last month Canadian MP Vince Gasparro announced in a video on social media that Kneecap were banned from Canada, meaning upcoming shows in Toronto and Vancouver would not be able to go ahead. One of his justifications for that ban was the pending criminal case against the band’s Mo Chara in the UK.Following the dismissal of that case on Friday, there has been speculation that the ban may be lifted. However, it’s not yet known if that will happen, or – for that matter – if there ever was an actual ban in the first place. Because, as of Monday,…
New South Wales Police have said they will “review and consider” a ruling made in the Australian courts yesterday in which a woman was awarded AUS$93,000 in damages in relation to an unlawful strip search that she was forced to endure at the Splendour In The Grass music festival back in 2018. Judge Dina Yehia ruled that a NSW police officer was “entirely wrong” to assume that a strip search was justified simply because a drug detection dog “sniffed towards” festival-goer Raya Meredith at the 2018 event. “The actions of the searching police officer went far beyond those objectively necessary for…

South Korean artist hanl unveils a deeply personal vision on Secretly Waiting to Become a Butterfly, an album that treats music as testimony rather than commodity. “Making music is my daily practice of true self expression,” hanl explains, a guiding ethos that runs through the record’s blend of spoken-word candor, cinematic instrumentals, and soulful pop flourishes. The opening “Editor’s Notes” is a spoken-word piece, exploring artistry and personal honesty — declaring “my art is my testimony and prayer” and full expression of self, whilst treasuring art as a means of expression rather than for monetary benefit. “Piano Intro” ensues in…
The Last Dinner Party have shared an emotive new single called ‘Second Best’, and added more dates to their UK tour. Written by guitarist Emily Roberts, ‘Second Best’ centres around that feeling of being infatuated with someone that you know will ultimately betray you time and time again. It comes with subtle nods to Sparks,…
