Silica Gel are an unpredictable band. Will they release a 19-minute track that morphs from acoustic plucks to electronic layers, as they did with ‘S G T A P E – 02’, deliver indie-rock anthems like ‘No Pain’ or take on a more classical piano piece in the likes of ‘MachineboyGong’? That reputation for being impossible to pin down is one the Korean indie band have built over years of experimental works, from their early days as a group that included VJs among their number to their sprawling second album, 2023’s ‘Power Andre 99’. Their latest move, ‘NamgungFEFERE’, sees them…

Kevin Parker has made good on his promise to release new Tame Impala, delivering a new single as the ostensible first taste of a forthcoming LP. Dubbed “End of Summer,” the seven-minute track arrives as Tame Impala’s first release via their new home at Columbia Records. While its release is transitional, so too is its sound, with Parker leaning on the history of dance music to recast the project as “kind of future primitive rave act,” per a press release. While prominently featuring Parker’s trademark vocals, “End of Summer” is an undeniable shift from the main focus of previous Tame…
Bands often set their stall out when they decide on a name, and Folk Bitch Trio suggests a refreshing directness in a genre that can so often be overwrought. It’s by no means a misnomer; on their debut album, Heide Peverelle, Jeanie Pilkington and Grace Sinclair cast a sharp and often acerbic eye over affairs of the heart with a wisdom that belies their age – the three are still in their early twenties. It is little wonder that Jagjaguwar, the label that was the launchpad for Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen, was so keen to sign them. The…
A beautifully catchy psych-pop sound shines on “Shaping Up,” a recent single from Field Trip. Bouncy keys and mellow guitar pulses drive into a lush vocal intrigue — “walls are closing in on us,” — though also beckoning “not to be overcome” by the tumult. The vocal reassurances build with effervescent charm, as the “let it fall into place” urgings take hold in the multi-layered vocal harmoniousness thereafter. Sounding like a lovechild of past (Todd Rundgren) and present (Memory Tapes), the track’s production shines throughout, particularly during the “is this everything that you wanted?” introspections past the two-minute turn —…
