Scarlett Johansson will be starring in Mike Flanagan’s upcoming Exorcist film – find out more below.

The film – which will be a standalone entry in the iconic horror franchise – is to be written and helmed by The Haunting Of Hill House and Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan. Yesterday, it was officially revealed that two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson will lead the upcoming film.

Flanagan said in a statement to Variety: “Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film.”

Further information surrounding Johansson’s role, the film’s plot and other cast members have yet to be revealed.

Flanagan’s “radical” Exorcist film was first announced back in May 2024, with a March 2026 launch date attached. In June this year, Flanagan confirmed that the film was being delayed has he’s currently focused on an eight-episode adaptation of Carrie for Amazon Prime Video.

A new release date for Flanagan’s Exorcist film has yet to receive a new launch date.

Flanagan’s upcoming film will be an all-new story and not a sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, which was directed by David Gordon Green. Green had planned to make a trilogy of his own, with the sequel The Exorcist: Deceiver originally scheduled for a 2025 release, but left the franchise after Believer underperformed with critics.

2023’s The Exorcist: Believer scored a four-star review from NME‘s Alex Flood. Flood wrote: “Surprisingly, the best part of Green’s work isn’t even the horror. It’s the emotional story that weaves in and around the spooky bits… So all we’ll say is that it results in a truly heartbreaking sequence that will definitely make you cry. Yes, tears of sadness (really). This might not be what fans expect from an Exorcist movie, but they’ll be even more surprised that it’s actually watchable.”
